FROM CANADA, WITH LOVE_

We manufacture clothing right here in Canada. We knit, dye and sew every piece of clothing we offer in our own backyard. Our products are proudly made by the hands of Canadians from start* to finish. When our parent company Roopa Knitting Mills was founded in the 1990’s, roughly 70% of clothing sold in Canada was made in Canada. Due to globalization, market shifts and frankly the pursuit of cheap labour, that number has been consistently dropping to well below 10% of clothing sold in Canada today. These numbers drop even more substantially when you account for what “Made in Canada” really means. The current rule around Made in Canada stipulates that 51% of the product must be manufactured in Canada. What that generally means for our industry is that fabrics are imported from overseas and then cut and sewn here in Canada. We don’t spotlight this to undermine anyone making their products in Canada in this way, in fact we support all Canadian manufacturers. The reality is that most materials are no longer manufactured in Canada and the only way to make apparel locally is to source the fabrics from overseas and assemble them here.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

We make the materials right here, our knitting and dyeing facilities are 30 minutes from Toronto where we take yarn to finished fabrics. You may have noticed an asterisk earlier when we mentioned creating products from “start* to finish”, this is because we make all of our products from cotton yarn and this has to be imported. Cotton plants cannot acclimate to the Canadian climate and would be impossible to grow here. Now this is where things get a little interesting in the current landscape of 2026. If you’re baking a pie then realize you don’t have sugar and the stores are closed. Where do you go? Your friendly neighbour, of course. With that in mind, the majority of our cotton used to knit our fabrics is grown and spun in the USA. We’ve always considered this as a strength in our process of manufacturing locally as the footprint of raw materials is very low. Also, we believe it is better to do business with your neighbour. With everything going on, this has not changed - there may be some chaos in the neighbourhood but we still love our neighbours and bring our cotton up from the good ol’ US of A.

Now that you have some background on our raw materials, let’s get back to what we do. Every piece of clothing we manufacture passes through the hands of Canadians in our factories. From our knitting and dyeing facilities in Brampton to cutting and sewing in Scarborough we are proudly made by Canadians. Whether they have been here their whole lives or are newcomers to Canada, these people are the backbone of manufacturing quality apparel in this great country they call home. We wanted to highlight the invaluable importance of the makers in our manufacturing process and introduce you to our team.
